City police charged a South Carolina man with aggravated assault after his girlfriend died Monday evening in a domestic incident, according to a Scranton police release.

Officers responded at about 3:45 p.m. to the rear of 1131 W. Locust St., Roundwoods Place, West Scranton, for a report of a woman  who was not breathing. When police got to the scene, they found Rose Hernandez, 18, in a puddle of blood and bleeding from the mouth.

She was rushed to Geisinger Community Medical Center’s Trauma Unit, where she was pronounced dead.

Her injuries were consistent with having been hit by a motor vehicle, police said.

Officers spoke with Joseph Garcia, 18, who said the couple had been arguing before the incident.

Garcia told police he had been inside the car, but didn’t want Hernandez to get in. When he attempted to drive away, Hernandez clung to the door of his car.

He said when he attempted to stop, Hernandez hit another vehicle.

When he stopped the vehicle, Garcia found Hernandez on the ground.

Police charged Garcia with two counts of aggravated assault. He remains at Lackawanna County Prison, according to state records.

Hernandez’s autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
