Five Northeast Pennsylvania counties received nearly $10.9 million in state funding for transportation projects, Gov. Josh Shapiro announced recently.
The funding was part of a total of $47 million from the state Multimodal Transportation Fund for highway, bridge, bike and pedestrian projects in 34 counties, and based on PennDOT criteria involving safety benefits, regional economic conditions, technical and financial feasibility, job creation, energy efficiency and operational sustainability.
The NEPA funds include $1,395,860 to the city of Scranton to replace the Ash Street Bridge, according to state Rep. Bridget Kosierowski, D-114, Waverly Twp.
“The Ash Street Bridge is a key piece of our local infrastructure that is in need of repair,” Kosierowski said in a news release. “This targeted investment will restore the bridge, making our motorists and pedestrians safer.”
The bridge crosses Roaring Brook near the East Scranton Little League complex.
The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grant funding to municipalities, councils of governments, businesses, economic development organizations, public transportation agencies, and ports and rail freight entities to improve transportation assets and enhance communities. The projects support the safety and accessibility of Pennsylvania’s infrastructure.
Applications for the next round of grants will open on Monday at 8 a.m. and will be due by Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. Grant recipients are expected to be announced in summer 2026. More information about the program and funded projects is available at the state Department of Transportation website.
