A Kutztown woman shot and killed her husband during an argument on Tuesday, set the gun on a dining room table at the home and called police to report the crime, officials said.

According to investigators, Elizabeth McKenna, 46, of Kutztown Borough, has been charged with murder, aggravated assault and related offenses after she, allegedly, told police she shot and killed her husband, 53-year-old William Kelly, at their home following an argument on Tuesday.

At about 8:26 p.m. on Tuesday, police received a 9-1-1 call from a home along the 400 block of West Walnut Street in Kutztown Borough, from a woman who, allegedly, told operators that she had just shot her husband.

Upon responding to the home, officials said, officers found Kelly laying unresponsive on the dining room floor of the home after he had been shot in the head.

McKenna allegedly told police that Kelly had been “antagonizing her” during an argument in the dining room when she walked to a second-floor bedroom, retrieved a handgun from a safe there.

After getting the firearm, police said, McKenna allegedly admitted to officers that she returned to the first floor where she shot Kelly at close range.

After the shooting, McKenna put the firearm on the dining room table and called 9-1-1 to report the incident, police said.

The handgun, investigators said, was recovered at the scene.

A 10-year-old child was in an upstairs bedroom when the shooting occurred, police said.

McKenna is in police custody at the Berks County Courthouse as she awaits an arraignment hearing, officials said.
