After one period Saturday night, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins found themselves in an unusual position thus far in the early season.
They were down three goals.
However, the ending was the same as it has been in the previous three games.
The Penguins scored five goals in the third period and they won their fourth straight to open the campaign, 6-3, over the Bridgeport Islanders at Total Mortgage Arena in Connecticut.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (4-0-0-) and Providence are the lone two undefeated team left in the AHL Atlantic Division. The Pens have eight points, two ahead of both Providence and Charlotte.
Down, 3-0, entering the second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton racked up six unanswered goals.
Ryan Graves’ first score of the season in the second period trimmed the deficit to two entering the third.
In the first 10 minutes of the third, Rafael Harvey-Pinard, Sam Poulin, Ville Koivunen and Danton Heinen all scored to give the Pens a 5-3 lead. Atley Calvert’s shorthanded goal with eight minutes left concluded the scoring.
Calvert had a big weekend for the Penguins, scoring three times in the two road games.
For the second straight night, Sergei Murashov picked up the win in net, stopping 29 of 32 shots.
On Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., the Penguins return to Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza to face off with intrastate rival Lehigh Valley. The team then hits the road again next weekend for back-to-back games at Charlotte.
