The University of Scranton saw five players reach double figures, and the Royals led by 19 at the half in an 88-68 victory over King’s on Saturday afternoon in nonconference men’s basketball.
Scranton raced out to a 40-21 lead at the half and that proved the difference. The Royals held a 48-47 scoring advantage in the second half.
Sammy Tornabene led Scranton with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Will Marion scored 14 points, and Brendan Carr added 13 points, five assists and seven rebounds. Josias Carbon came off the bench to score 14 points in 16 minutes, while Luca Baratta had 11 points in 22 minutes. Scranton finished the game shooting 55.7% from the floor and shot 13 of 23 from the 3-point line.
Ben Rodner-Tims scored 16 points and had four assists for King’s. Matt Christian came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points.
Scranton improved to 8-1 overall and is 3-1 in the Landmark Conference. King’s fell to 3-8 and will open MAC Freedom play Wednesday night against Lebanon Valley at home.
Hood College 86, Misericordia 55: At Hood College, the Blazers held a nine-point lead at the half and outscored Misericordia, 43-21, in the second half to hand the Cougars a loss on Saturday afternoon.
Misericordia shot 27% from the floor and shot 8 of 38 from beyond the 3-point line. Hood College held a 57-34 advantage on the boards.
Ryan Nasuti led Misericordia with 18 points. Matt Prociak scored 13, and Jack Gallagher finished with eight.
Misericordia is 8-3 and opens MAC Freedom play on Wednesday night against Stevens at home.
Muhlenberg 74, Wilkes 59: At The Marts Center, despite four of five starters scoring in double figures, Wilkes could not overcome an eight-point deficit.
Muhlenberg held a 36-28 lead at the half and outscored Wilkes, 38-31, in the second half. The Colonels shot 33.9% from the floor and shot 2 of 21 from beyond the 3-point line.
Daniel Santaniello led Wilkes with 19 points. Eli Becker scored 13, with Jack Argento and Lucas Lesko each scoring 11. Colin Ackerman scored two points and had a team-high 10 rebounds. Ackerman and Argento each had four assists.
The Colonels are 6-5 and return to Landmark Conference play Wednesday afternoon. The Colonels are 1-3 in the Landmark Conference.
Women’s basketball
King’s 73, Lycoming 48: At McGrane Gymnasium, King’s started Saturday afternoon’s game strong, scoring 40 points in the first half, 21 of them coming in the first quarter, in a nonconference win.
Cadie Lewis was one of four King’s players in double figures with a team-high 25 points. Irelynd Long scored 14, while Lauren Casey had another double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Gianna Dickson scored nine points. Lewis pulled down seven rebounds and added five assists. Dickson finished with four assists.
The Monarchs are 7-4 and open MAC Freedom play Wednesday night against Lebanon Valley at home.
Misericordia 57, Franklin & Marshall 43: At The Anderson Center, Lizzy Mitchess scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds to help Misericordia extend its winning streak to two.
Morgan Janeski scored 13 points for the Cougars and Emily Romanowski scored eight. Ava Cirigliano came off the bench to score eight points in 21 minutes. Misericordia shot 46.7% from the floor and finished the game with 32 points in the paint.
The Cougars are 5-6 and open MAC Freedom play Wednesday night against Stevens at home.
Eastern 61, Wilkes 57: At Eastern, trailing by one point going to the fourth quarter, Eastern outscored Wilkes, 22-17, to come from behind and pick up the nonconference win.
Yamirelis Matos posted a double-double for Wilkes, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Maliyah Warren scored 10 points and had nine rebounds, while Madison Robel scored nine points and Carolyn Lundy had eight. Warren also had four blocked shots.
Wilkes is 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the Landmark Conference. The Colonels return to conference play Wednesday night when they host Juniata.
Women’s ice hockey
Wilkes 3, Utica University 1: At Utica University, Chayce Hyndman scored in the first period and Drew Hayhurst added a power-play goal in the second to help the Colonels defeat host Utica at the Utica University tournament.
After Utica made it a one-goal game in the third period, Jordan Ferry gave the Colonels some breathing room to make it a two-goal game at 14:33.
Rivier University 10, King’s 1: At Revolution Ice Centre, Rivier University scored the first six goals of the game, one of them coming on a first-period power-play, in a win over the Monarchs.
Eva Goner scored an unassisted goal for King’s at 15:53 of the second period.
Men’s ice hockey
Norwich University 3, Misericordia 2: In Northfield, Vermont, Norwich University scored a short-handed goal in the first period and added a power-play goal in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
After Misericordia’s Corbin Scheibel scored on the power play to cut the deficit to 2-1, Frank D’Ancona scored for Norwich in the second period to make it 3-1.
Misericordia’s final goal came at 1:58 of the third period when James Eng scored off an assist from Ryan Karbach.
