Police said an investigation is underway after the victim of an attempted car theft was able to scare off a suspected thief, but not before shots were fired during the overnight incident in Northeast Philly.

According to police, the incident unfolded at about 1 a.m., when a victim — who police did not immediately provide further identifying information on — exited their home to find an armed gunman attempting to steal a vehicle parked along the 1700 block of Strahle Street in the Rhawnhurst section of Northeast Philadelphia on Monday morning.

At that time, police said, the victim was able to scare off the gunman and began chasing the individual down the street after thwarting the car theft.

But, the gunman turned and fired twice, officials said, back at the victim as they fled the scene.

The victim, police said, was not struck and was unharmed.

Investigators at the scene found two spent shell casings, according to police.

Officials did not provide a description of the gunman, but said an investigation into this incident is underway.
