LONGSWAMP TWP., Pa. – Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) say fire crews were able to rescue a cat and dog from a burning home in Longswamp Township Saturday.
Police say a neighbor reported the blaze located at 19 Colt Drive at approximately 4:37 p.m., and Topton and neighboring fire companies responded.
When crews arrived on scene the rear of the home was fully involved and flames were spreading quickly due to the wind. A second alarm was requested, bringing additional fire companies from both Berks and Lehigh Counties. Additional tankers were also requested to transport water to the scene.
Officials say firefighters conducted searches inside the structure and rescued the cat and dog, but two other cats were found dead inside the home. The occupants of the house were not home at the time of the fire.
Crews from both Berks and Lehigh Counties worked together to bring the fire under control within an hour.
Police say the fire originated on the first floor along the rear wall of the home. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. No criminal activity is involved with the cause of the fire.
No firefighters were injured.
Officials estimate damage to the property is more than $300,000.
