SCRANTON, Pa. — The Scranton Police Department on Monday said they are looking for a stolen car used in an abduction attempt in front of a South Side school.
The abduction attempts happened earlier Monday morning in front of South Side Intermediate School and on the 500 block of East Elm Street, city police said. Few details were immediately available and the detective bureau declined to comment beyond what was already publicly issued.
The car used was a silver Hyundai Elantra with tinted windows that was reported stolen from the 500 block of Cedar Avenue. It had a Pennsylvania license plate tag LYK1711.
The person behind the wheel, police said, had been a man with a black face mask.
Pictures of the vehicle captured by a city officer’s body camera show that an officer tried to approach the car 8:13 a.m. at the corner of Maple Street and Slocum Avenue — right in front of the school. At one point, a hand could be seen extending toward the rear driver’s side window.
The Scranton School District said the police are stepping up their presence around all school buildings today and asked people to contact 911 if they are approached.
“At dismissal, we are asking parents and guardians to assist us by picking students up on time and, when possible, walking children home,” the district said.
If anyone has information that could help, they should contact the Scranton police.
