It was an historic day in Delaware County as the youngest-ever sheriff in the state of Pennsylvania was sworn in on Monday, Jan. 5.
At just 30 years old, Siddiq Kamara is also the first African immigrant to become a sheriff in the Commonwealth.
Kamara explained that he was inspired to run after the death of cousin, 8-year-old Fanta Bility.
He also told NBC10 that he thinks his age is an asset.
“We need new blood, new leadership and new vision in the line of law enforcement,” Kamara said.
He said that his goals for his term include modernizing the department and increasing community engagement.
Kamara is a former Yeadon police officer and served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard for six years.
Before being elected as sheriff, he was an agent with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.
His term as sheriff is a four year term.
