READING, Pa. – Reading Police are investigating a shooting this morning near the city’s border with Mt. Penn.

Officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Mineral Spring Road around 8:30 a.m. for a reported shooting.

Arriving officers located a 35-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest.

“Shortly after we just heard so many sirens,” said Anisa Reinstrom, who lives not far from the scene.

The victim was transported to Reading Hospital for treatment, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening

A large police presence was observed in the block throughout the morning as officers canvassed the area for evidence. At least two cars were towed from the scene.

The police activity prompted 16th and Haak Elementary School to briefly operate under “secure action” before resuming a normal school day just after 9:00.

Police say the victim was involved in a shootout with unknown individuals when he was shot. No additional suspect information is available at this time.

Neighbors say they’re grateful for the quick response but hope it’s not a sign of things to come.

“What if it’s becoming, unsafe,” said Reinstrom. “That’s my main worry.”

Reading Police say this is an active investigation and they’re continuing to gather information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Reading Police Department at 610-655-6116 or anonymously to Crime Alert Berks at 877-373-991.
