Curtis Robert Garl

OBITUARY

Curtis Robert Garl of Fleetwood was born to Raymond & Melva Parkyn Garl on July 21, 1934 at his childhood home in Reading, Pa. He departed this life on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at the Reading Hospital, reaching the age of 91 years. Death was caused by congestive heart failure.

Curtis received his formal education in the Reading school system. In January of 1957 at the age of 23, he joined the United States Army and served as a tank commander for two years. Due to the lack of hearing protection, Curtis suffered significant hearing loss during this time.

Curtis loved working with the public. He held various jobs over the years that allowed him to serve in this capacity, including several grocery stores, and Weaver’s Hardware.

Curtis had a soft heart and God began to call him to a closer walk with Him. This resulted in him becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Fleetwood, Pa. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith by Minister Arnold Wiggers on March 16, 1980. Christian life presented its challenges to him, but God in His love drew Curtis back and he was reaccepted into Church membership on May 19, 2024 by Minister Sam Shirk. He remained faithful to this reconsecration to the end. It was not uncommon to hear him speak of Jesus and leave his testimony with others.

God provided Curtis with a very kind caretaker in Bruce Hill. Bruce spent many hours bringing Curtis to church, taking him to different functions, and taking him to the doctor.

His survivors include two siblings: Diane Dietrich, & Barry Garl; special friend: Bruce Hill, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Raymond & Melva, siblings: Raymond Garl, June Fidler, Cleon Garl, Donald Garl, Joan Bechtel, John Garl, Gilbert Garl, & Clair Garl.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30pm January 8, 2026 at the Fleetwood Mennonite Church, Richmond Twp., with Sanders Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 1501 North 11th St., Reading, in charge of arrangements.
