CATASAUQUA, Pa. – The list of River Crossing YMCA locations across the region has shrunk by one.
The Suburban North YMCA at 880 Walnut Street in Catasauqua closed for good on Sunday, January 4.
The decision to shutter the branch was first announced to members in December, 69 News previously reported.
Membership at the facility had dwindled in recent years, and keeping the club open was no longer a financially viable solution, a spokesperson for River Crossing YMCA told 69 News.
It’s unclear what the future holds for the more than six-acre property on Walnut Street, which is owned by the River Crossing network. A spokesperson said the group is still evaluating options.
According to Lehigh County property records, the YMCA building went up in 1973. Ownership of the property was transferred to River Crossing in 2024, when the nonprofit was formed by the merger of Greater Valley YMCA and YMCA of Bucks and Hunterdon Counties.
With the closure of the Catasauqua location, River Crossing now has 15 branches under its umbrella. Suburban North branch members were offered a free, three-month membership to any of the other branches.Â
