Derek Bradley propels Haven to victory with a pair of third-quarter Touchdowns

Strath Haven took down Lower Merion 42-7 on Friday night, both Senior Night and Homecoming for the Panthers.

Here are my thoughts prior to the game.

Strath Haven won the toss and elected to defer to the second half, and the Bulldogs would have the first offensive drive of the game. Lower Merion, led by QB Nick DeLuca, came out firing, with multiple passing plays that were all incomplete. Lower Merion had to punt on its first drive.

Strath Haven took over in a solid field position and began to utilize their number one position, the running backs. Ryan Mudrick and Yosef Ali took over on the first drive, leading the Panthers into the red zone and finally onto the one-yard line. Ryan Mudrick finished the job, hammering his way into the end zone for a Haven touchdown. Matt Styers’ Extra Point was right down the middle and the Panthers led 7-0 with 7:1o left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs took over and began driving down the field, Nick DeLuca leading the charge in the pass and run game and taking the Bulldogs into Haven territory. After a few blunders, Lower Merion was facing 4th down and 10 and elected to go for it. The gamble did not pay off as the Bulldogs turned over on downs.

The Panthers go nowhere on their next drive, and it’s three and out.

Lower Merion really dominated on their next drive. With pass after pass and rush after rush, the Panthers couldn’t get in the way of the Bulldogs. Lower Merion quickly found themselves deep in the Haven zone at the ned of the first quarter. The Bulldogs did decide to take some deep shots and shortly faced forth down and ten once more, and again, Lower Merion decided to try. DeLuca took the snap, dropped back, and fired deep into the endzone and found a man caught touchdown Thomas Burke. The extra point was good, and the game was tied with 11:38 remaining in half number 1.

Strath Haven turned it over on the kickoff, and it was Burke on the recovery. Despite the fantastic field position for the Bulldogs, they are stopped and have another fourth down decision, and once more, they decide to go for it. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the Panthers took over.

Strath Haven would go three and out once more on their next drive, and the Bulldogs took over once again just outside the fifty. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, their next drive was yet another turnover on downs, and Haven took over once more.

Strath Haven drove deep and capped off a scoring drive with a Yosef Ali rushing touchdown. Styers XP was good and haven led 14-7 with 33 seconds left in the half.

The Bulldogs came out with their second-string QB, and they quickly turned the ball over, Grayson LaFrance with the INT and run back to the 10-yard line. Luke Mulhern does it himself and rushes it into the end zone for a Haven TD with 9.4 seconds left in the half. The XP was good, and Haven led 21-7 at half.

The Panthers came out of the halftime break with the ball and a 70-yard touchdown run from Kasey Hudson. The XP was good and Haven was now in front 28-7.

Lower Merion took over but had to punt, and Haven began driving once more. The Panthers found themselves just inside the ten-yard line, and a rush from Derek Bradley put the Panthers up 35-7.

Lower Merion was picked off once more, and Haven started their final scoring drive, and the drive that began the running clock.

Derek Bradley from 35 yards out found the end zone, and the Panthers put themselves up 42-7. Neither team would score again before the clock hit zero, and the Panthers took home a 42-7 victory over Lower Merion.

I got to chat with Derek Bradley following the conclusion of the game. Bradley scored two touchdowns en route to a Panther victory, leading to a happy Homecoming and Senior Night for all in attendance.
