A woman who crashed her vehicle into a series of Lancaster County homes Monday, leaving it hanging from overhead utility wires was experiencing a “medical emergency” while driving, police said.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. at the 500 block of North Third Street, according to Columbia Borough police.
The vehicle crashed into several front porches of homes along the street. When police arrived, they found the car being held up from its rear-end by cables and wires.
Police said a woman was driving south on Chickies Hill Road when she began feeling ill and went unconscious. That’s when her car picked up speed, swerved over the median and struck the side of the Route 30 overpass.
The car continued southbound on North Third Street gaining speed before striking a telephone/electric pole and crashing into the front porches of several homes.
Police believe the abrupt stop and front-end impact caused the rear of the vehicle to lift off the ground and rest on the wires.
Emergency crews worked to extricate her from the car, and she was transported to a hospital. Police said she was released from the hospital the same day with minor injuries.
Based on witness statements, video footage, the driver’s cooperation, and other evidence, police believe the incident was the result of a medical emergency.
“We would like to thank all organizations involved in their rapid response and for a successful conclusion to what could have been a much more dangerous incident,” the police department said in a statement.
Anyone with information on the crash should contact Columbia Borough police at (717) 684-7735.
