On Friday Jan. 4 just before 7 a.m. the Erie Animal Network received a message that a vacant home was set to be demolished later in the day. Normally this would raise no concerns, however, many local stray cats had been inside the home seeking shelter from Erie’s harsh weather.

The Erie Animal Network rushed into action calling the mayor’s office and City Council Vice President Tyler Titus reaching out for help removing the animals before the walls were taken down. The entire community was supportive in their efforts and had the same conclusion that no harm should come to the cats.

Traps were assembled and equipment pulled together before the makeshift evacuation team entered the home. Luckily with some time available the Network were able to remove seven cats out of the home.

While some of the cats aren’t social, they are all in desperate need of a lot of vet care. Even though the organized didn’t have room other local shelters opened their arms to the cats. The ANNA Shelter took in one of the cats that was in severe medical distress, Companion Animal Coalition stepped in to take a teenage cat, Noelle’s Foster Kittens were on the scene to help if there were any pregnant moms or babies inside.

The organization reflected on this almost deadly situation and continued a conversation with Erie Redevelopment Authority and VP Titus to ensure that in the future any homes set for demolition receive a proper sweep for any stray cats residing inside. They have opted to call it Operation All Clear, something the organization hopes will help prevent any mishaps with the local strays during all future home demolitions.
