EXETER TWP., Pa. – The Berks County Coroner’s Office was called to a home in Exeter Township Wednesday morning following a fire at the location.

County dispatchers said fire personnel were sent to the 1200 block of Dauphin Place just after 7 a.m.

Initial emergency dispatches called for a fire in a single-story residence.

Personnel from Exeter Township Volunteer Fire Department brought the fire under control and conducted a search of the residence.

During that search, the body of 70-year-old John Chiarelli was located inside the doorway of the home, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is pending autopsy results.

The origin and cause of the fire have not been determined and will be released by Pennsylvania State Police following completion of the autopsy and fire investigation.

Authorities say there are no indications of foul play at this time.

Exeter Township Police Department is urging all residents to take a moment to check their smoke detectors and make sure they are functioning properly.
