SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — The Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency and the City of Scranton have issued Code Blue Frigid Weather Alerts for Sunday and Monday nights as dangerously cold conditions are expected across the region.
The first alert will be in effect from 8 p.m. Sunday, January 11, through 7 a.m. Monday, January 12, with wind chills forecast to drop to around 14 degrees. A second Code Blue is scheduled from 8 p.m. Monday, January 12, through 7 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, when wind chills are expected to reach 22 degrees.
Code Blue alerts are issued when temperatures or wind chills fall below 20 degrees and activate emergency measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly individuals experiencing homelessness.
During the alert periods, several emergency warming and shelter locations will be available in Scranton:
St. Anthony’s Haven, 409 Olive Street, open from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.Weston Field House, 982 Providence Road, opening at 7:30 p.m.Community Intervention Center (CIC), 445 North 6th Avenue, open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours if conditions require
Officials urge residents to check on neighbors, ensure pets are brought indoors, and limit time spent outside during extreme cold.
