LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. – Pennsylvania State Police say a man from Berks County was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when his minivan hit a horse and buggy, causing the death of its driver.

Danial Miller, 33, of Mertztown, is charged with Homicide by Vehicle While DUI and multiple related DUI charges, according to a news release from state police.

State police said the crash happened Wednesday on the 4000 block of Strasburg Road in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County. 

An investigation determined that a Dodge Caravan was traveling east on Strasburg Road when it collided with the rear of the horse and buggy, state police said.

According to state police, the collision caused the 65-year-old woman who was driving the horse and buggy to be ejected.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release.

State police said the minivan’s driver was identified as Miller. Further investigation determined Miller was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash and was taken into custody on scene, according to state police.
