TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – In this week’s edition of We the People, we have a story about two groups who are celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday, too.
“Ohio was really the gateway to the West. A lot of people traveled through Ohio to grow the country. So we are really important, I think Ohio is very important with the growth of the country,” Linda Huber with the Ottawa County Historical Society said.
To celebrate the rich history of America and northern Ohio, all year long, you and your friends or family can take the self-guided America 250 tours in Erie and Ottawa counties.
Shoreline Stories highlights the history along the Lake Erie shoreline, where you will explore lighthouses, landmarks and local legacies across the area.
Ottawa County’s History Mystery Trail features a tour of 31 sites throughout the county.
“We’re hoping basically, number one, that people enjoy themselves and see these stunning sites that we have here in Ottawa County; the natural landscapes, the rich history and we hope they come back often,” Huber said.
Both tours use an online platform to help guide you on your own, so you and the family can go at your own pace.
“It’s really interesting, the juxtaposition of the history with the modern technology. But we’re hoping that it will bring all sorts of groups of people together to do this,” Shifflet said.
Making it a fun, easy and safe way to learn about our area.
“Our goal is to get people outside and learning more about what we have here locally and explore more in their own backyards,” Jannah Wilson, the executive director of Park District Ottawa County, said.
Even if you are a local expert, you are bound to learn something new.
