San Francisco and Philadelphia will do battle one more time in the postseason, this time for a chance to advance to the divisional round. The Eagles beat the 49ers in January 2023 in the NFC title game, 31-7. San Francisco bounced back to beat Philly the following December, 42-19. The three meetings between these teams have been played in Philadelphia, with the Niners holding a 2-1 edge.
The 49ers had a rough patch in the middle of the season, going 3-3 following a 3-1 start. Sitting at 6-4 in November, some had begun to write the Niners off. But then the team got Brock Purdy back from injury and reeled off six consecutive wins before dropping the final game of the season to Seattle last week. That loss cost the 49ers the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the playoffs. With the Super Bowl in Santa Clara this year, San Francisco could have potentially played at home for the entire postseason.

Philadelphia won its third NFC East title in four years but also struggled down the stretch. The Eagles went 3-4 from Week 12 on and even lost three in a row during that time before bouncing back to win three straight. Philly closed the season with a loss to Washington due in large part to head coach Nick Sirianni resting starters despite still having a chance to win the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Fox Sports rule analyst Dean Blandino explained why the illegal man downfield flag was picked up.
Eagles lineman Cam Jurgens was more than a yard downfield before Jalen Hurts threw the ball. But he was engaged in a block and could drive the defender downfield, making the play legal.

Whether or not it was the intention for the opening drive or a game-long strategy, the Eagles ran Saquon Barkley at the 49ers heavily. The running back had six carries for 45 yards on that first possession.

The Eagles answered the 49ers’ touchdown quickly with a scoring drive of their own.
On third-and-goal from the 1, the tush push seemed like the natural call for Philadelphia. But the Eagles opted against a brotherly shove, instead calling an inside handoff to tight end Dallas Goedert. He swept around left end for the touchdown.
However, Jake Elliott missed the extra point, doinking his kick off the left upright. So the 49ers keep a 1-point lead.

The San Francisco 49ers haven’t typically been underdogs in the Kyle Shanahan era, but the 49ers closed as 5.5-point road underdogs at the Eagles.
It’s the biggest postseason underdog that San Francisco has been since the 49ers were also +5.5 at the Packers in a Jan. 22, 2002 divisional round game.
The 49ers won that game 13-10.

The 49ers will get back starting left tackle Trent Williams this week, who’s been out since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 17’s win over the Chicago Bears.
After missing each of the week’s practices leading up to Week 18, Williams returned to action with two limited sessions on Thursday and Friday before being listed as “questionable” for Sunday’s game.
The 49ers are 1-9 in games without Williams since 2023 — a huge win for Brock Purdy and the offense already without one of its top offensive weapons in WR Ricky Pearsall.
