SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Officials in Lackawanna County and the City of Scranton have issued multiple Code Blue Frigid Weather Alerts this week as dangerously cold conditions are expected to impact the region.
The alerts are being put in place overnight during periods when wind chills are forecast to drop well below 20 degrees. Code Blue alerts are designed to protect vulnerable populations, particularly individuals experiencing homelessness, by activating emergency shelter services.
The first alert is already in effect from 8 p.m. Monday through 7 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills expected to fall into the mid-20s. Additional alerts are scheduled for Wednesday night through Thursday morning, Thursday night through Friday morning, Friday night through Saturday morning, and Saturday night into Sunday. The coldest conditions are expected Thursday night, when wind chills could drop to around four degrees.
During Code Blue periods, emergency shelters will be available in Scranton. St. Anthony’s Haven on Olive Street will open nightly from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. The Weston Field House on Providence Road will open its doors at 7:30 p.m. The Community Intervention Center on North Sixth Avenue will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours if conditions warrant.
Officials urge residents to check on neighbors, limit time outdoors, and take precautions to stay warm during the prolonged stretch of cold weather.
