Nine projects in Berks County are receiving a combined $2.3 million investment in new state funding that will help create new recreational opportunities, expand outdoor access and protect natural resources.

“The outdoors are for everyone — whether you enjoy spending time at a local park, out on the water or on a trail — every Pennsylvanian deserves access to safe, welcoming outdoor spaces close to home,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said in a release.

He said with these investments communities across Pennsylvania will be able to improve parks, build new trails and help more people enjoy the benefits of nature, in cities and rural towns alike.

The recipients in Berks:

• Spring Township will get $1 million to develop West Wyomissing Park. Work will include construction of walking trails; a parking area; tricycle track and pavement games; installation of play equipment with required safety surfacing, pavilion, fencing and signage; and ADA access.

• Reading will receive $348,500 for the development of the Schuylkill River Trail. Work will include the construction of a trail from Riverfront Drive to the intersection of Front and Penn streets and lighting; ADA access; landscaping; and other related improvements.

• Exeter Township will get $290,400 for further development of Trout Run Park. Work will include construction of pedestrian walkways and parking areas; installation of playground equipment with required safety surfacing; ADA access; landscaping; and other related improvements.

• The Student Conservation Association will receive $249,000 to coordinate urban and community forestry in Reading; engage communities in planting trees and building local tree stewardship capacity; and coordinate and fund a workforce development program for youth and young adults.

• Berks Nature will get $195,000 to use as payment toward the acquisition of about 8.8 acres in Kenhorst for an addition to the Angelica Greenway.

• Douglass Township will be awarded $180,000 for the rehabilitation and further development of Ganshahawny Park along the Schuylkill River. Work will include construction of a boat launch and pedestrian walkways; installation of stormwater management measures; ADA access; landscaping; and other related improvements.

• The Schuylkill River Greenway Association will get $104,000 for the rehabilitation and further development of Reeser’s Landing along the Schuylkill River in Exeter Township. Work will include rehabilitation of a boat launch and parking area; ADA access; landscaping; and other related improvements.

• Berks Nature will receive $100,000 to use as payment toward a conservation easement on about 452 acres in Heidelberg Township for open space, passive recreation and watershed protection.

• Mohnton will get $32,500 to prepare a site development plan for the 13-acre Memorial Park. Work will include an electronic written report.
