Peter P. Kanton Jr.
OBITUARY
Peter P. Kanton Jr., of the Greenwood section of Moosic, passed away on Friday, January 9, at Allied Hospice. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, MaryCarol Tighe Kanton, who passed away on June 4, 2021.
Born in Scranton, Peter was the only child of the late Peter and Nellie (Kapchunas) Kanton. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, attended Lackawanna College, and later studied at Penn State and Cornell University. Following his education, he opened his own business, Kanton Realty.
Peter was a devout Catholic and a faithful parishioner of St. Ann’s Basilica, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served on numerous boards, including St. Joseph’s Center; the Eric Jessica Moreken Foundation, since its inception in 2003; Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy Family Residence; St. Mary’s Villa; ARC; and the Centennial Campaign Committee at Marywood University. He was also honored with the Spirit of the IHM Sisters Award and served as secretary of the Moosic Borough Zoning Board for many years.
Peter’s greatest happiness came from his grandchildren, who were the light of his life and the recipients of his constant love and attention. He found peace in gardening and birdwatching, and took great pleasure in dining out, always enjoying good food and good company.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Ann (Gerald) Weller and Colleen (Tom) Devine; his grandchildren, Shane (Kayla) Weller, Katelyn Weller and her partner, Levi Kania, and Nolan Devine; along with countless cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Dillon T. Devine.
