A long-term traffic shift on southbound I-95 in Philadelphia will affect drivers beginning this month.

PennDOT announced that barrier installation and related construction connected with a major bridge repair project will take place overnight from Tuesday, Jan. 13, through Friday, Jan. 16. This work will establish a new traffic pattern on southbound I-95 between Spruce Street and Packer Avenue.

According to MyChesCo, the overnight work will close one lane from 9 p.m. to midnight, then two lanes from midnight to 5 a.m. PennDOT warns drivers to expect significant backups and delays. All construction work is weather-dependent.

A new long-term traffic configuration will be in place by 5 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, and will remain through late May to support bridge repairs and maintain three through traffic lanes in the work zone.

The work is part of a $37.4 million federally funded project focused on high-priority interstate bridge repairs to improve safety, mobility, and structural integrity. According to MyChesCo, the work includes repairing deck and superstructure components, prestressed concrete beams, railings, guiderails, sign supports, expansion joints, deck seals, bearings, and concrete elements, along with cleaning and repainting overhead sign structures and upgrading roadway lighting to LED luminaires.

The project’s general contractor is IEW Construction Group, Inc. of Hamilton, New Jersey.
