NORTHAMPTON CO., Pa. – The Bushkill Township Police Department has received a report of a sophisticated scam where an individual poses as a Northampton County Sheriff, according to a release from the department.

Police say the individual claims the victim has failed to appear for jury duty and threatens them with jail time if they don’t pay fines immediately.

This scam involves the use of a “spoofed” phone number, making it appear as though the call is coming from the Northampton County Sheriff’s office, even displaying on the caller ID, officials say.

According to the Northampton County District Attorney’s Office, this scam has affected other Northampton County municipalities. Authorities say it is essential to be vigilant and aware that law enforcement officers or Sheriffs will never contact you demanding payment to avoid jail time.

The release says variations of this scam may involve utility companies claiming you owe money or loved ones needing financial assistance. In all cases, payment will be demanded in cryptocurrency or gift cards. Police say legitimate companies and individuals will never accept payment in these forms, and this is a strong indication of a scam.

If you receive any calls demanding payment in this manner or suspect a scam, please contact the Bushkill Township Police Department, or your local police department if you are not a Bushkill Township resident, for guidance before sending any forms of payment.

The department reminds people to always be cautious and verify the authenticity of calls and requests for payment.
