Carly Walters scored off a corner kick from Faith Meals in the 23rd minute Saturday and the Marywood University women’s soccer team beat Marymount University, 1-0, in an Atlantic East Conference game in Arlington, Virginia.

Walters’ goal was her 14th of the season and extended the Pacers’ winning streak to 11.

Genevieve Morrison made seven saves to earn the shutout for Marywood (4-0-0 league, 13-1-0 overall).

Scranton 3, Juniata 0: At Huntingdon, Morgan Griffin scored twice and Molly Martys had two assists to lead the University of Scranton to a Landmark Conference win over Juniata.

Addison Van Lenten also scored for the Royals (7-0-0, 12-2-2). The defense held Juniata to one shot in posting its 11th shutout of the season.

Notre Dame of Maryland 8, Keystone 1: At La Plume, Notre Dame of Maryland spoiled Senior Day ceremonies for Keystone College with a win in United East Conference match.

Brooke Freni scored for the Lady Giants (0-7, 0-12-1) off an assist from West Scranton grad Reshma Kaldan.

Essex CC 2, Lackawanna 0: At Schautz Stadium in Dunmore, injuries force Lackawanna to start the second half with nine players and Essex County College took advantage by scoring twice for a NJCAA Region 19 Division II win.

Elizabeth DePrimo had 13 saves for the Lady Falcons (0-6-0, 1-8-0).

Men’s soccer

At Huntingdon, No. 14-ranked University of Scranton battled to a scoreless draw with Juniata College in a Landmark Conference match.

Charlie Smith had one save for the Royals (5-0-1, 10-0-4) in earning his 10th shutout of the season. Scranton’s defense held Juniata to two shots, one on goal.

Marywood 3, Marymount 1: At Scranton, Marywood University scored three unanswered goals to defeat Marymount University for the first time in program history in an Atlantic East Conference game.

It is the third straight win for Marywood and sets a school record for victories in Atlantic East play.

Ryan Surowiec, Donnie Powell and Jared Sanborn scored for the Pacers (3-1-0, 6-7-1). Goalkeeper Ryan Schweigart made six saves.

Notre Dame of Maryland 3, Keystone 0: At La Plume, Keystone College lost on Senior Day to Notre Dame of Maryland in a United East Conference match.

Kolten McVean had nine saves for the Giants (1-6-0, 3-12-0).

Essex CC 14, Lackawanna 0: At Schautz Stadium in Dunmore, Essex County College scored 10 goals in the first 45 minutes to waltz to the NJCAA Region 19 Division II victory.

Goalie Rupert Deniz had 10 saves for the Falcons (0-4-0, 2-7-0).

Field hockey

At Weiss Field, Maggie Keys had one goal and three assists to spark the University of Scranton to a 7-0 victory over Juniata College in Landmark Conference action.

Keys’ assists give her 16, which breaks the program single-season record.

Shana Goldsmith chipped in two goals and one assist for the Royals (6-0, 12-3), who have six straight wins.

Marywood 3, Neumann 2: At Scranton, Marywood University overcame a two-goal deficit with three second-half goals to beat Neumann University in the Atlantic East Conference.

Dariane Jones set up Brooke Barwick’s goal, then scored two goals, including the game-winner with 40 seconds remaining.

Bre Marchiano made four saves for the Pacers (2-0, 7-8).

Football

At Newport News, Virginia, Apprentice School scored the game’s final 21 points to pull away to a 45-21 victory over Keystone College on Saturday.

Quarterback and Western Wayne graduate Frankie Leyshon was 17 for 38 for 208 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions for the Giants (3-3). Jayson Nami caught 10 passes for 136 yards and one score.

Women’s volleyball

At Arlington, Virginia, Marywood University saw its 12-match winning streak end with losses to Marymount University and DeSales University.

Host Marymount won the first match, 26-24, 25-16, 25-16. Genevieve Pollock led the Pacers with nine kills and Taylor Hallam had eight. Ayla Bransford collected 24 assists and 10 digs.

DeSales then outlasted Marywood in five sets, 25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 25-11, 15-10. Carolina Samaniego finished with 13 kills and 12 digs for the Pacers (1-1, 19-3). Gracee Work had 10 kills, Andrea Fraga totaled 20 digs, Bransford added 36 assists, Tess Connolly had four aces and Hallam had four blocks.

Scranton 3, Catholic 1: At Washington, D.C., Cammi Quirk had 43 assists, including the 2,000th of her career, to highlight the University of Scranton’s win over Catholic University in Landmark Conference play, 26-24, 25-11, 19-25, 26-24.

Quirk also had 11 digs and two aces for the Royals (4-1, 15-8). Deanna Whelpley added 21 kills and three blocks. Ava Seidenstein had 17 kills and two blocks, while Lauren Angelucci had seven kills and two blocks. Maddie Forry contributed 10 digs and two aces. Camryn Hoffman had 14 digs and one ace and Gwen Koester had six kills.

Keystone 3, Rosemont 0: At Rosemont, Keystone College earned its first United East Conference win by sweeping Rosemont College, 25-8, 25-18, 25-16.

Indya Rogers and Rachel Davis had six kills apiece for the Lady Giants (1-6, 2-19). Davis also collected four digs, three service aces and two solo blocks. Josie Evans-Grant had 11 service aces and five digs. Her 11 service aces rank second in the program record books for a match.

Lackawanna 3, Bergen CC 0; Lackawanna 3, Atlantic Cape CC 0: At the Lackawanna Student Union, the host Lady Falcons (10-10) swept a tri-match. They defeated Bergen Community College, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21, then knocked off Atlantic Cape Community College, 25-6, 25-12, 25-10.

Cross country

At Gettysburg, the University of Scranton teams competed at the Aubrey Shenk Invitational.

The Royals placed fifth out of 34 teams in the men’s standings with 183 points, one point behind Saint Francis University, Pa. Lebanon Valley College was first with 56 points and St. Bonaventure second with 68.

Lackawanna Trail grad Brayden Clarke placed seventh with a 24:56.6 on the 8K course.

Scranton’s women were ninth out of 33 teams with 273 points. Top finisher was Scranton High grad Emily Hopkins in 11th with a time of 22:15.6 on the 6K course.

Swimming

At Ithaca, New York, the University of Scranton teams competed in a tri-meet with Hartwick College and Ithaca College.

The women defeated Hartwick, 207-92, but lost to Ithaca, 218-92.

Aviah Dahlgren from Honesdale won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:07.29 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.85.

Meanwhile, the Scranton men beat Hartwick, 206-93, but lost to Ithaca, 206-88.

Jimmy O’Malley won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:18.29 for the Royals. Jake Brunetti touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.23. Matt Sherry won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.82 seconds.
