Firefighters from Lockport Fire’s fourth platoon rescued a dog from the icy waters of the Erie Canal Tuesday night.

LOCKPORT, N.Y. — Lockport firefighters made a daring rescue to save a dog from the Erie Canal Tuesday night.

According to the Lockport Fire Department, LFD’s fourth platoon, which the department calls the “The Canal Rats” were dispatched to the State Street Bridge for reports of a dog that was trapped in the Erie Canal.

LFD says the dog, whose name is Lucy, was found across from the Empire State Trail trapped on rocks in the canal. Firefighters were unable to reach Lucy on foot, but deployed an RDC, a type of inflatable raft, crossed the canal, and rescued the tough pup.

“Besides the cold plunge and a little… a lot of mud, Lucy is uninjured and now home recovering,” LFD said in a post on their social media pages. “Our beloved fourth platoon once again proving that it’s not the size of the rat in the fight, but the size of the fight in the rat.”
