A storm system is expected to bring rain and icy conditions Wednesday night into Thursday in the Lehigh Valley.

The system should impact the region Wednesday afternoon as rain before turning into snow by Thursday morning. A cold front could cause icy roads and hazardous travel for the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

The cold front will cause temperatures to “rapidly tumble” overnight and change rain to a light snow or a mix of rain and snow, forecasters said. The Poconos could get 1 to 2 inches of snow, while the Lehigh Valley could get up to half an inch, the weather service said. Any rain or snow should end Thursday morning.

Cold air and gusty winds are expected, and anything that does not dry out could freeze and create an icy commute, forecasters said. They noted that the precipitation could change to rain before it stops, and that could wash away any pre-treatment on the roads.

Additionally, below normal temperatures and blustery conditions could lead to single-digit wind chills Thursday into Friday, the weather service said.

🧊🥶 Winter will make a abrupt return tomorrow morning as a strong cold front sweeps offshore. A band of rain will change to snow for some areas before ending. Light snow accumulations may result, especially NW of I-95. (1/2) #PAwx #NJwx #DEwx #MDwx pic.twitter.com/9klQk4RFoz
