ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Pennsylvania lawmakers and other officials got a look inside a bilingual school in Allentown on Thursday.

State representatives Peter Schweyer, Michael Schlossberg, and Mayor Matt Tuerk all toured the Sonia Sotomayor Dual Language Immersion Academy.

The American Federation of Teachers union donated 20,000 dollars to the school’s para-program, which helps educational support staff go back to school to become teachers.

A union leader said it’s important to bring in leaders to so they could see the progress first-hand.

“It is remarkable stories happening every day and if we don’t get out to see it, then those stories don’t get the traction that they should and so I’m happy that we were able to bring together so many different groups so the traction can continue and they get those resources to continue the work,” said Wendy Coleman, President of AFT Pennsylvania.

The event also highlighted the contributions of para-professionals and the Latino community in the district.
