Bethlehem Township police said they found explosive devices and materials Thursday in the home of a man who had been arrested two days prior on assault and other charges.
Access to the neighborhood surrounding the home in the 3800 block of Lehigh Street was restricted for about three hours Thursday night while the Bethlehem Bomb Squad and agents from the FBI and ATF cleared the scene, police said.
According to township police, officers were called to the home shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday for a domestic violence assault.
Daniel Allen Bissey, 73, was arrested and charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment of another person and terroristic threats, including threats to law enforcement officers. Police said he threw a can at a woman in the home, striking her face, and threatened her with a gun. More than 20 firearms were found in the home and taken into custody by police at that time, authorities said.
Around 5:10 p.m. Thursday, Bethlehem Township police and Northampton County deputy sheriffs returned to the home to take custody of more firearms that were discovered. While there, they were told there were possible explosive materials within the residence. The materials were safely removed by bomb squad members.
Investigation into the explosive materials is ongoing, police said. Bissey is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the assault charges on Jan. 26.
