READING, Pa. – The city is looking to pause parking tickets at North 5th and Oley and North 5th and Douglass streets while officials consider removing spots to improve sight lines for drivers.

“It’s a very dense neighborhood with lots of multi units and it really hasn’t made a difference,” said City Councilman Chris Miller.

It’s not the first time council has done something like this, as 69 News previously reported on similar issues in another city section on Hampton Boulevard. Council put a moratorium on fines there last month.

“Were gonna have the conversation over the next six months to see if this is the answer. I don’t think it is. We need to come up with alternatives,” he said.

The city says it’s a matter of finding a middle ground between driver safety and providing adequate parking in certain sections of the city.

“There’s no stoplight between Greenwich Street and Windsor Street, so people are speeding,” Miller said.

Councilman Miller says taking parking spaces away helps drivers but hurts people who live nearby.

“They’ll be happy to see something happening with this issue. I’m sorry it took three years, but it was tried on Hampton Boulevard and didn’t work there either,” Miller said.

“People come out of work and they ain’t got nowhere to park,” said Alfredo Torres, who lives nearby.

The city plans to continue to discuss this ordinance.
