Yet another sinkhole is causing traffic headaches for travelers on Route 33 southbound in Northampton County.

PennDOT District 5 spokesperson Sean Brown said Friday that the highway is down to one lane around mile marker 8.7, which is between the exits for Route 191 and Tatamy.

Brown said that crews are on site with equipment to excavate around the hole and fill if needed. There is no time frame for completion, he added, and crews will try to complete the work while keeping one lane open.

The section of Route 33 around Tatamy and Stockertown has had problems with sinkholes since it was opened in the early 1970s. Bridges over Bushkill Creek are currently being replaced after sinkhole problems.

Sinkholes have been an issue with other roads in this part of the Lehigh Valley. Last August, a large one opened along Main Street in Palmer Township. The same thing happened on the same road in 2021.

A sinkhole in late August 2024, in the same vicinity at Carson Court, closed the eastbound lanes of Main Street for several days. One also opened along Route 22 in Bethlehem Township in March 2024.
