The rank of Pitt faculty average salaries rose in comparison to other Association of American Universities public schools in fall 2024, particularly when cost of living is taken into account.
The annual report compares Pitt salaries to 37 of the 38 AAU publics — Ohio State does not submit data. It covers all full-time faculty with any instructional responsibilities, excluding those in the School of Medicine. The salaries in the report are nine month equivalent, or two term salaries, according to Amanda Brodish, assistant provost for institutional research and analytics, whose team compiles the data.
In general, for professors on the Oakland campus at all levels, unadjusted salaries rank around 30 out of 37 and rise into the low 20s when adjusted for cost of living. Find the full report on the Institutional Research and Analytics website, under Average Salaries of Faculty (Pitt Passport sign-on required).
Professors (581 full-time): Average salary, $160,200; rank, 30; adjusted rank, 22.
2023-24 rankings: 31st and 23rd
Associate professors (536): Average salary, $109,700; rank, 33; adjusted rank, 22
2023-24 rankings: 35th and 25th
Assistant professors (690): Average salary, $92,300; rank, 34; adjusted rank, 25
2023-24 rankings: 37th and 27th
Instructors (162): Average salary, $70,000; rank, 25 (out of 32 schools); adjusted rank, 17
2023-24 rankings: 28th and 20th
Lecturers (68): Average salary, $62,300, rank, 30 (out of 32); adjusted rank, 29
2023-24 rankings: 32nd and 31st
The average salaries increased across the board for faculty at Pitt who were working in fall 2023 and fall 2024. The percentage increase ranged from 5.2% for professors to 12% for instructors.
Brodish pointed out that faculty who were a part of the collective bargaining unit received a raise for two years that went into their fall 2024 pay, “so this actually reflects two salary increases.”
Regional campuses
For the regional campuses, the rankings are listed in deciles, with the bottom of the fifth decile and top of the sixth being the median, and the 10th decile being the lowest. The report looks at baccalaureate institutions, both public and private, in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. It also uses the combined average of salaries in fall 2023 from the Johnstown, Bradford and Greensburg campuses.
Professor (30 faculty): Average salary, $91,000; sixth decile, unadjusted; second decile, adjusted for cost of living
Associate professor (70): Average salary, $78,600; fifth decile, unadjusted; second decile, adjusted
Assistant professor (84): Average salary, $65,600; fifth decile, unadjusted; second decile, adjusted
Instructors and lecturers (27): Average salary, $58,200; fifth decile, unadjusted; second decile, adjusted
