The bright green panels along the three-story atrium stairs at Hillman Library are gone, replaced over the winter break with white panels trimmed in blue, with accent colors of Pitt Royal Blue under the stairs and Pitt Gold on a large, adjacent airflow vent.
A University of Pittsburgh logo adorns two panels on a landing facing the Schenley Drive entrance.
The original color of the panels, which debuted when the final phase of the full library reinvention was opened in May 2025, has been a topic of discussion over the past several months. “Why green?” many asked, in a Pitt world dominated by blue and gold.
The lime green panels were very noticeable through the glass-fronted atrium at the corner of Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive.
Matt Hansen, assistant vice chancellor for design stewardship in the Office of Planning, Design and Construction, said that, “Given feedback and the prominence of the site, we switched from the former color to a Pitt-centric palette. The update aligns the space with the University’s color and brand standards, helping create a consistent campus identity.”
