NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Pa. – PennDOT says a sinkhole opened up on a stretch of Route 33 southbound in Northampton County Friday.

Crews are on site at mile marker 8.7 with equipment to excavate around the hole and fill if needed, PennDOT spokesperson Sean Brown said. That’s between the Stockertown/Nazareth and Tatamy exits.

33 South is currently down to one lane, and crews will try to do the work with one lane open, Brown said.

At last check, crews are expected to be out on this part of Route 33 until after midnight, according to officials.
