PENNSYLVANIA (WHP) — Could Pennsylvania be in store for a parade of lights Monday night?
The Northern Lights could dance across the night sky on Monday as a strong solar geomagnetic storm is expected to interact with Earth’s magnetic field.
A large coronal mass ejection (CME) is hurtling toward Earth and is expected to arrive before sunrise on Tuesday, according to online reports. The ejections from the Sun could hit Earth’s protective magnetic field like a drum, painting the night sky with a tapestry of colors that could be visible across 24 states.
The geomagnetic storm is expected to reach G4 (severe) levels of intensity, with G5 being the strongest.
Based on NOAA’s aurora forecast map, almost all of Pennsylvania could see the Northern Lights this evening.
According to CBS 21 Meteorologist Ed Russo, conditions are expected to clear shortly after sundown, providing favorable conditions for residents to see the auroras.

Ambient light levels are expected to be low, with the moon transitioning from a new moon on Sunday, and moonlight will have a minimal impact on aurora viewing conditions.
