Remember the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2025 season? Even though it just ended one week ago, it might as well be a decade. So much has happened since that it truly numbs the loss of Monday night’s playoff defeat and the twists and turns that took place over the course of the season. Frustrating as another one-and-done was, the year had plenty of highs. Big wins and big plays.
Let’s look back at them. Considering the weight of the moment and the highlight reel nature of the play itself, here are the Pittsburgh Steelers’ top ten plays of the 2025 season.
10. Jalen Ramsey’s Hit Calls Game (Jets, Week 1)
A forgotten one, in part because it came in the season opener. Jalen Ramsey’s first game with the Steelers was a memorable one. He called “game” after Chris Boswell’s long field goal gave Pittsburgh a 34-32 lead.
With the New York Jets trying to answer with a field goal of their own, Justin Fields threw to open WR Garrett Wilson on 4th and 3. Ramsey came flying down to pop Wilson with a vicious, but perfectly legal, hit to jar the ball loose. Game over. Steelers win.
9. T.J. Watt’s Strip/Sack, Nick Herbig Touchdown (Week 12, Bears)
The 2025 season was a disappointing one for T.J. Watt. But one of his best plays came against the Chicago Bears. Containing QB Caleb Williams, Watt strip-sacked him in the end zone. Nick Herbig dove on the ball for the touchdown, giving Pittsburgh a 14-7 lead. One of three defensive scores the Steelers notched for the year.
8. Calvin Austin III’s Three Go-Ahead Scores (Week 1, Week 3, Week 18)
A three-fer here. Calvin Austin III found the end zone three times in 2025. All three came in the fourth quarter. All three gave Pittsburgh the lead. All three ended in a Steelers win. The last two were great routes to either beat press coverage or win on a double move. Austin came through with clutch plays in weighty moments.
7. Aaron Rodgers 68-Yard TD To Pat Freiermuth (Week 7, Bengals)
Though it ended with a heartbreaking loss, Aaron Rodgers’ long touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth was a major primetime moment. Backed up in score and in down/distance, Rodgers avoided pressure and threw a dime to Freiermuth just ahead of a Cincinnati Bengals defender’s outstretched hands.
Freiermuth did the rest, racing to the end zone as Pittsburgh took the lead following the extra point. It was the longest catch of Freiermuth’s NFL career.
6. Chris Boswell’s 60-Yard FG (Week 1, Jets)
A play that might be forgotten about, too. Had it not been for Chris Boswell’s clutch kick, Pittsburgh would’ve lost the season opener to the New York Jets. A devastating way to open the year. But Boswell nailed a career-long 60-yarder, hitting it from the Jets’ logo. A boot that would’ve been good from 65 yards.
Absolutely perfect.
5. Kenneth Gainwell’s Fake Tush Push (Week 12, Bears)
Pittsburgh finally hopped on the Tush Push bandwagon this year. Perhaps no team got as creative with it, either.
The Steelers’ first wrinkle came in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears. Instead of rugby scrumming straight ahead, QB Connor Heyward took the snap and handed off to Gainwell in the usual “pusher” position.
He darted right side and, picking up key blocks from OT Troy Fautanu, TE Pat Freiermuth, and TE Darnell Washington, had clear daylight downfield. He nearly scored before being ruled out of bounds a yard shy of the end zone. Pittsburgh punched it in right after.
4. Darnell Washington’s Viral Catch And Run (Week 11, Bengals)
Bully ball. Darnell Washington broke out with a more-involved season in the passing game. The apple of Aaron Rodgers’ eye, Washington played every bit to his 300-something pound size, making the Cincinnati Bengals look like bugs on a windshield.
A stiff arm, a broken tackle, and a plow of a third Bengals defender along the sideline, the play instantly went viral. A showcase of Washington at his best.
3. DK Metcalf’s 80-Yard Dublin Score (Week 4, Vikings)
Pittsburgh’s win in Ireland was special. It meant the world to the Rooney family. So it’s only fitting that the biggest play of the game ranks high on this list. With the Steelers leading 7-3, Aaron Rodgers fired a slant over the middle to DK Metcalf.
Metcalf turned on the jets and truly showed the speed that’s so rare for his size. A downfield block by Calvin Austin III helped him complete the 80-yard score. A joyous moment in Dublin.
2. Jaylen Warren’s Breaks All The Tackles (Week 2, Seahawks)
Jaylen Warren’s play didn’t end in a touchdown. Pittsburgh’s drive didn’t even end in points, spoiled by an end-zone interception. But Warren again showed his heroic individual effort, breaking four tackles on one play and bobbing and weaving for a 65-yard gain. Downfield blocking helped spring him the rest of the way.
Aaron Rodgers called it one of the best individual efforts he’s ever seen. It was peak Warren. A non-stop bowling bowl who is a pain to get down.
1. Kenneth Gainwell’s Catch Of The Year (Week 16, Lions)
What a gem, that Kenny Gainwell. Catch of the year, play of the year. A play that went viral for so many reasons. Rodgers plainly telling Gainwell to motion out and sprint downfield. His arm strength to put the ball downfield off his backfoot. Gainwell to fight through an obvious penalty, somehow make the catch, and have the wherewithal to get up and sprint into the end zone (crucial with the half nearly over).
A did-that-just-happen play that tied the game at the break and led Pittsburgh to pull off the upset of Detroit.
The No. 1 play of the Steelers’ season.
