(WHTM) — A “severe” geomagnetic storm lit up the sky Monday night in central Pennsylvania.
Scientists at the Space Weather Prediction Center said the storm had the potential to make the northern lights visible across a large part of the United States, including clear skies above Pennsylvania.
abc27 Chief Meterologist Eric Finkenbinder said the lights would’ve been most visible between 7 p.m. and midnight.
Around 7:20 p.m., viewer James Rogers snapped a shot of the dancing sky above State Game Lands 254 in Liverpool, Perry County.

Later in the evening, another viewer, Megan Diemert, captured the lights above a farm in Reedsville, Mifflin County.

Clear, dark skies are the viewer’s friend when trying to see the northern lights. Most of Pennsylvania had cloud coverage Monday night, but parts of the Midstate did open up.
Even when the light is not visible to the human eye, a phone’s camera can easily pick it up. This is especially true when the earth is experiecing a strong geomagnetic storm, like the one it did Monday.
