A water use advisory was issued Monday afternoon by the city, saying that water flow to the Big Island Works plant was temporarily restricted.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the city said crews have been working around the clock to break through heavy ice and restore water flow. The city isn’t taking in raw water at the moment, and all water use is being supplied from water already stored at the plant, the city said.

The city asked residents both in Sandusky and Erie County to limit water use due to high demand. However, the water is safe to drink.

“While crews are hopeful that conditions will improve, it is possible that the plant’s stored water supply could be exhausted before intake flow is restored,” the city wrote in a Facebook post. “If that occurs, the City will immediately communicate next steps and any additional actions residents may need to take.”

Updates will be posted on the city’s website and social media.
