SCRANTON, Pa. — Honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the goal of an event in Lackawanna County.

Penn State Scranton hosted the annual event, inviting members of the community to come together and learn about the life and work of the civil rights icon as well as service, volunteerism, and unity.

“So many people don’t actually know a lot about Dr. King, a lot about what he stood for. They know the name, they know like the big you know, sayings and stuff, but the true advocacy and the true servant that he really was, a lot of people don’t know,” said Amber Viola, Navy Veteran, and former Commander of Amer Legion Post 274, Gouldsboro.

Two people also received Excellence in Diversity Awards at Tuesday’s event at Penn State Scranton.
