GLADWYNE, PA — Gladwyne’s Richie Ashburn Field may soon have lights, paving the way for nighttime little league games in Lower Merion.

The Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners Wednesday will authorize a memorandum of understanding with Lower Merion Little League for the installation of lights at the field.

They will discuss the memorandum at 7:30 p.m. in the second floor boardroom of the Lower Merion Township Administration Building, 75 E. Lancaster Ave. in Ardmore.

The purpose of the memorandum of understanding is to establish the terms and conditions under which Lower Merion Little League will engage in the construction of improvements at Richie Ashburn Field.

These improvements will consist of lighting on the baseball field and the batting cage adjacent to the baseball field. Additionally, lighting will be added to the ingress/egress pathway from the lot, as well as any other necessary improvements.

And the agreement covers the operation of the installed lights in accordance with all ordinances and directives from the township and the board.

Part of Lower Merion Little League’s obligations under the memorandum of understanding includes operating the lights only during little league seasons and only for baseball- or softball-related activities. Lower Merion Little League will also be able to run the lights at other times and/or for other purposes as directed by the township, including for but not limited to township functions held at the field.

Lower Merion Little Leagues also must give remote access and control to the lighting, as well as share contact information for all corresponding individuals for use by Township personnel, in case of
emergency, as directed by the township.

The field lights will not be permitted to be on past 10 p.m. daily and any egress or periphery lighting will not be permitted to be on past 10:30 p.m., absent an advance approval of a time extension by the Lower Merion Township Parks and Recreation Department Director.
