We are starting to see the domino effect of Mike Tomlin stepping down as the Steelers head coach. Exactly one week to the day of Tomlin stepping down, one of his longtime assistants has already landed a new job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Tuesday that Danny Smith was hired as the next special teams coordinator of the Buccaneers. Smith has over 30 years of coaching experience in the NFL and has served as the special teams coordinator of the Steelers since the 2013 season.
There is a strong likelihood that Smith is not the only Tomlin assistant to depart from the Steelers organization for a new opportunity, given that the Steelers have made it clear that their new head coach will have control over their staff. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has already had several interviews over the last few weeks for both head coaching and coordinator positions, most recently receiving a request to be interviewed by the Los Angeles Chargers.
