Nate Scheelhaase appears to be emerging as a strong candidate to be the next head coach for Omar Khan and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm were the betting favorites to replace Bill Cowher as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach 19 years ago. But instead, the Steelers hired Mike Tomlin. It’s possible history repeats itself this offseason with the Steelers and Nate Scheelhaase.
The Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator is the youngest and least experienced candidate the Steelers have expressed interest in for their head coach opening. But similar to Tomlin in 2007, pundits see Scheelhaase quickly becoming a strong candidate for the Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac made that argument Wednesday because of how well Scheelhaase did during his virtual interview.
“I’m not going to say he’s the top guy because some of these candidates still have to interview in person with [Art Rooney II], and he’s the one who will make the call,” Dulac wrote in his weekly Q&A chat. “But I will say Scheelhaase was an impressive interview, which fits with what other NFL people think of him.
“Hmmm, so was Tomlin…”
After Dulac wrote that, Steelers Depot’s Ross McCorkle referred to Scheelhaase as giving off “Tomlin vibes.”
“If the in-person meeting goes as well as it seems the virtual one did, perhaps he can shoot to the top of their list like Tomlin did almost 20 years ago,” wrote McCorkle.
