Sheetz fans may enjoy a new drive-thru from the convenience store chain after the project received a planning recommendation in the Lehigh Valley.

The Upper Macungie Township Planning Commission recommended conditional use approval to township supervisors on Wednesday for the project at the intersection of Route 100 North and Tilghman Street.

Julie Wagner Burkart, representing Sheetz’s land use counsel Stevens & Lee, said during the meeting that the Sheetz would include the pickup window for made-to-order food and 12 gas pumps.

While the planning commission and a couple of residents brought up concerns such as traffic impacts, Eric Mountz of the firm Traffic Planning & Design said Sheetz developments typically change traffic patterns in the immediate vicinity but don’t typically generate a substantial traffic increase in the surrounding roadway network. He gave an estimate of about 1,780 vehicles entering and exiting the site daily.

When asked to confirm project details on Tuesday, Sheetz provided the following statement from Public Affairs Manager Nick Ruffner: “Sheetz can confirm its interest in this site, but it is too early in the process to provide details.”

Sheetz operates two drive-thrus in Bethlehem and one in Palmer Township, according to its website.

Sheetz’s competitor, Wawa, briefly introduced a drive-thru concept in Lower Macungie Township, but it closed in less than a year.
