A 17-year-old boy has been charged for his alleged role in a hit-and-run crash that killed a beloved disc jockey last month in Overbrook.
Hector “June” Rodriguez, 54, was biking home from a shift at a bar early on the morning of Dec. 20 when he was struck by an SUV at the corner of 56th Street and Lancaster Avenue, according to law enforcement officials. The driver appeared to swerve but continued westbound on Lancaster in the aftermath of the collision, authorities added.
Police said a teenager, whose name was not released due to his status as a juvenile, turned himself in Monday alongside his mother and attorney after detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest.
The boy is being charged with causing an accident involving death, homicide by vehicle, driving without a license and speeding, among other crimes, according to the PPD.
Rodriguez reportedly had a passion for music and held a longtime DJ residency at Bob and Barbara’s Lounge in Center City.
Cycling advocates, in the wake of his death, called on elected officials to implement stronger protections for riders and pedestrians, particularly along Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia.Â
