OBITUARY

Richard A. Shruba Jr., 69, of Scranton passed away January 6, 2025.

Born May 15, 1956, he was the son of the late Richard A. and Florence Marie (Plocha) Shruba.

Known to many as “Shub” or “Shrub” Ricky was a lifelong resident of North Scranton, growing up in the Marvine Dutch Gap section of the city. Ricky attended Stephen Girard School, North Scranton Junior High School and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Ricky began his working life at Scranton Lace Company, where he completed an apprenticeship and became a weaver. He later entered the roofing trade and completed an apprenticeship with the roofer’s union. He worked at Mid Valley Roofing and spent 21 years with Dunmore Roofing before retiring after 32 years in the trade.

In 2009 Ricky began the restoration and care of McDonnell Cemetery with the help of his friend Ed Boczar. The cemetery is the final resting place of five Civil War soldiers. Through his dedication, a rededication ceremony was held on November 11, 2009. A sign bearing the names of the veterans was installed, along with period appropriate flags and markers. In 2017 a flagpole was erected with the help of friends and two benches were donated by VFW Post 25 of North Scranton.

Ricky loved his country, his parents, his family and his friends.

Surviving are his cousins, including Paul Comonie and wife Cathy to whom he entrusted his final arrangements; his “nieces” Kayla and Kylie McGuigan; and best friends in the world Ed Boczar and Jen and Bill Fanning.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. in Duffy & Snowdon Funeral Home, 401 Church Street Moscow, PA.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
