A winter storm stretching from New England to North Texas will hit Easton this weekend, prompting the city to declare a snow emergency beginning Saturday evening. The Lehigh Valley is expected to receive 12-18 inches of snow through Monday, disrupting Lafayette College’s spring semester move-in. Here’s what you need to know about the storm.

Forecast

Temperatures are expected to drop to 7-8 degrees on Saturday night, with a high of 21 degrees the next day and up to 18 inches of snow starting Sunday morning. Wind gusts may reach up to 30 mph, with high winds continuing into the week. Snow is expected to stop early Monday morning, the day that will see the week’s temperature high of 25 degrees, followed by potentially subzero temperatures early Wednesday morning.

“We’re expecting much colder, very cold weather to persist, starting tonight through pretty much right through next weekend as well,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Staarman, who represents the local weather branch serving the Lehigh Valley.

Snow is not forecasted for the remainder of the week; icy conditions may be expected.

“Prepare to be just hunkered down wherever you are,” Staarman said. “Make sure you have enough food and supplies for the daytime Sunday and through Sunday night, and maybe even Monday.”

Lafayette College

Students were encouraged to arrive on campus before 5 p.m. on Saturday by an email from Lafayette Communications. Upper and Lower Farinon are currently available for meals, with meal plans opening a day earlier than previously scheduled. Skillman and Kirby Libraries will remain closed on Sunday, but are expected to reopen for the start of classes.

In-person classes on Monday remain up to the discretion of the professor. Space heaters and other electrical appliances are prohibited in college-owned residence halls by the Student Code of Conduct.

During the snow emergency period, parking will not be permitted on McCartney or Cattell Streets. Students with off-campus parking permits can park in the student section of Lafayette’s 901 Bushkill Drive lot, according to an email from the college.
