Dave Seamon is the sports editor of The Standard-Speaker. He began his career while a college student as a clerk in the Standard-Speaker sports department and later as a sports writer with the Daily Collegian and Weekly Collegian at Penn State University. After graduating, he worked in local radio as a news anchor, reporter and color commentator for sporting events. He returned to the Standard-Speaker as general assignment reporter in October 1990 and went on to cover Hazleton government, Hazleton Area School District and politics. He relished an opportunity to move to the newspaper’s sports department in June 1994, given his passion for sports. Dave spent the last 30-plus years reporting on games from Little League to the big leagues, from the pits at Pocono Raceway to Penn State football, from Joe Maddon to Joe Paterno, analyzing games and seasons, and profiling and featuring local athletes. He became sports editor in June 2008. He earned his second Keystone Press Award in April 2016 for his layout and design of the Standard-Speaker’s annual spring sports preview and later added his third and fourth Keystones for hsi coverage of the Hazleton Area softball team’s run to the state final in 2019 and a local podcast he co-produced with SSPTV’s Ken Cara. His first Keystone award came for a column he wrote about his father in 1995. . Dave’s work at the Standard-Speaker and in the community has earned him a place in the Hazleton Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. A native of Beaver Meadows, Dave lives with his wife, Helene, in Hazle Township. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Jillian and Lauren, and two sons, Matthew and Michael, and equally proud grandparent of KJ, who was born in October 2023.dseamon@standardspeaker.com
