NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., LEHIGH CO. (WOLF) — Pennsylvania State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that unfolded Saturday morning in Lehigh County.
Troopers from PSP Bethlehem were called to the 2800 block of Rockdale Road around 11:03 a.m. after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a man who was reportedly armed. When troopers arrived, they found a 27-year-old North Whitehall Township man sitting inside a parked Toyota Camry in the driveway of a residence, with a handgun visible.
Police say troopers set up a safety perimeter and attempted to communicate with the man in an effort to resolve the situation without force. During those attempts, the man fired his weapon from inside the vehicle multiple times and pointed the gun toward troopers, according to state police.
The situation continued for several hours, prompting the response of the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). Negotiators worked to reach a peaceful outcome, but around 2 p.m., the man again fired his weapon. At that point, a SERT member fired a shot, striking the man.
The individual was treated at the scene by Northern Valley EMS and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest for treatment. Authorities say no troopers were injured during the incident.
The investigation is being handled by the PSP Troop M Major Case Team, with assistance from the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office. No additional details have been released as the investigation continues.
