A man wounded during a shootout with Pennsylvania State Police troopers on Saturday has died of his injuries, authorities said.

The shooting followed an hours-long standoff outside a residence in Lehigh County.

Troopers were called to a home on the 2800 block of Rockdale Road in North Whitehall Township just after 11 a.m. for a report of a man with a gun causing a disturbance, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Troopers found a 27-year-old township man sitting in a car parked in the driveway, armed with a handgun, officials said.

Police tried to talk the man into surrendering, but he fired the weapon “more than once,” and aimed it at the troopers several times, police said.

The state police Special Emergency Response Team tried to negotiate with the man, but the standoff came to an end around 2 p.m. when police said he “discharged his firearm from the vehicle and was engaged by a SERT member who shot the male.”

The man was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he died shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office announced Sunday.

An autopsy is scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, authorities said.

The man’s name has not been released.

The shooting is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Major Case Team, the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.
